Background of the Study
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, which leads to difficulty breathing. In children, asthma is a leading cause of morbidity and hospital admissions worldwide (Ademola et al., 2023). Pediatric asthma is particularly concerning because it affects children’s quality of life, education, and social development. Effective management of pediatric asthma requires early diagnosis, appropriate pharmacological treatment, and environmental controls to prevent asthma triggers. Nurses, who are often involved in the day-to-day care of pediatric patients, play a vital role in asthma management by educating parents, monitoring medication adherence, and teaching children how to manage their condition effectively.
Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, a major healthcare provider in southeastern Nigeria, caters to a significant number of pediatric patients with asthma. Nurses in the pediatric ward and outpatient clinics are central to managing these children, providing support and education to families. Despite the growing prevalence of pediatric asthma, there is limited research on nurses' awareness and their involvement in asthma management in Nigerian hospitals. This study aims to investigate the level of awareness of pediatric asthma among nurses and assess the management practices they employ in Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Pediatric asthma remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, yet studies suggest that many healthcare providers, including nurses, may lack comprehensive knowledge of asthma management. Nurses at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital may not fully understand the best practices for managing pediatric asthma, potentially affecting the quality of care provided. Effective asthma management requires a multidisciplinary approach, and nurses’ roles in educating families, ensuring medication adherence, and managing acute asthma attacks are critical. This study will assess nurses' awareness of pediatric asthma and evaluate their management practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the pediatric ward and outpatient clinic of Enugu State University Teaching Hospital. It will assess their awareness and management practices concerning pediatric asthma. The study will not include other healthcare professionals involved in asthma management, such as pediatricians or respiratory therapists.
Limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data and the cross-sectional design, which may limit the ability to assess long-term changes in knowledge and practices.
